Despite the 20+ inches of snow we had this past Friday, the weather forecast for the next few days in the northeast looks somewhat spring-like. So as I grow more and more tired of the winter weather, I thought I’d post an image that’s all about the spring. I grabbed this shot in Gloucester last year on my way back from shooting the Annisquam lighthouse. The flowers pouring over the fence were enough to get me to stop the car and fire off a few shots.

Bring on the warm weather.

Every so often I find something in one of the mills that would be perfect if it were just in a different location. Many times it’s a large object that can’t be moved, but when it’s something small like this, I’m not afraid to move it around to find a happy compositional home for it.

I found this bucket on another floor of the Duck Mill in the middle of a pile of junk, and thought it would look great standing on it’s own. This empty space seemed like the perfect spot to give it a stage for it’s big debut, and it didn’t disappoint.

Have a great weekend.

Today’s image is the community church on Monhegan Island in Maine. Aside from the Island Inn, this may be the largest building on the island, which is a major contributing factor to the island’s charm. As I’ve posted about before, Monhegan is a small island off the coast of Port Clyde, Maine, and is about as quaint and quintessential coastal Maine as you’re going to find. Dirt roads, no cars, walk to everything. This is life on Monhegan. While I doubt I could live there year-round, I could certainly enjoy an extended vacation there in the summer.

This is the Duck Bridge in Lawrence. It spans the Merrimack River and recently reopened after renovations kept it closed for the past 2 years. I liked the juxtaposition of old and new with the updated old sign on its new piers, abutments and trusses, as well as the view of the rebuilt bridge with the old mills in the background. The reopening of the bridge is just another indication that the community of Lawrence continues on its path of revitalization.

On a related note, the response we received for our first Historic Mills Photo Workshop on April 6th was overwhelming, and I’m excited to announce that we have added a second workshop at the Everett and Stone Mills for May 18th. Please visit our web site for more information and to register.

The word facade comes from the French language, literally meaning “frontage” or “face.”

This is the facade of the Stone Mill in Lawrence. As you can see, it is full of textures. And colors. And lines. It also has a history. And significance. A past and a future. I’m drawn to it because its “face” conveys it all.

Today’s image comes from the Pemigewasset River in Lincoln, NH. This river provides so many great photo opportunities as it’s full of stones and boulders like these which can really add to a shot. I was initially trying to find a more grand view of the river when I was up there last year, but couldn’t find one that suited me. So instead I found this more intimate scene and threw on the trusty ND10 for a little long exposure goodness.

It’s back to the Stone Mill for today’s post. While this expansive space on the third floor is wide open, there are also some really nice little nooks that can break up the large space. For this image, I was drawn to the windows on either side of the corner, leading to the empty area beyond. This composition screamed for some fisheye love, but since I don’t have one, I’ll have to settle for the ultra-wide instead.

Have a great weekend.
